So, realized today that we’ve never explained what #FancyFriday is on this blog. Simply put we thought that there is no place in this world for casual friday. People have gotten far to casual as it is and to be honest, it’s a slippery slope we’re trying to stop. So we created #FancyFriday where we urge our instagram followers to dress up in there finest and tag us. It’s fun. Anyway, so it will be no surprise that todays outfit was planned around that pocket square, it is a thing of beauty and I just had to wear it. As per pocket square rules (yes there are rules) it should never match your tie, simply work with it.

There were about 23 entries this week and some really really great looks. It’s exciting to see how everyone puts in so much effort. We usually choose a male and female winner but there was 1 submission that took us by surprise and deserved a mention as well as his own title of #JnrFancyFriday winner.

@jonnyofthea sealed the deal with that real flower on his lapel. It was one of the many details in his outfit that made it stand out as the fanciest.

@laurennotwarren grabbed this weeks #fancyFriday for the ladies. Lots of great details in this outfit. She also showed us that girls can play too.

@rfdeal sent us this submission with his godson as fancy as they come. There was no way this couldn’t be awarded #JnrFancyFriday. Hoping to get some more of these in the future.

Below, in no particular order, are the rest of the entries. Some amazing looks and we’re happy to see #FancyFriday growing. Looking forward to seeing what we get next week. If you’re not on instagram feel free to enter via twitter at @whatmybfwore or mail us at [email protected].

Okay.Stay Fancy.

Todays outfit selection started with those shoe’s they’re about 5 years old now and I absolutely love them. They’re testament to why you should only ever by leather shoes, they last forever and just feel great. Ive swapped out the laces for some guys I bought at Paul Smith, colored laces have been since Paul threw some purple laces on his black shoes about 2 years ago. Now, the colored laces vibe is massive and a great cheap way to bring new life to your shoes and bring details to your outfit.

So, after ordering like 5 pocket squares online the other day as per my “I needed some pocket squares” post from a couple days ago I found these guys in Markham in Sandton. As far as on trend menswear in South Africa these guys get it right more often than not. The stuff’s not the most amazing quality, but then again it’s priced accordingly, the green and orange guy are R59.00 and the fancier blue and red guy is all of R69.00 (I suspect it may make it’s first appearance in tomorrows #FancyFriday). Now how you supposed to fold these guys? I’ll be doing a tutorial on that soon.

Okay. Stay Fancy.

It gets hard wearing ties in summer. Especially with the heat Johannesburg has been seeing lately. No reason to not dress up though, it’s just that dressing up takes on a different form. As you may know by now I start off each morning deciding on i thing i’m gonna wear, today was that pocket square I picked up last night while “getting the post”, but more on that later.

So, a while ago I promised a little tutorial on how to tie a bow tie, and what better day to do it then on “National Bow Tie Day”. Ok fine, that was yesterday, but it’s the 28th of August somewhere, and so we celebrate the bow tie and the great men who have worn them, Frank Sinatra, Winston Churchill, Pee-wee Herman and Krusty the Clown to name but a few.

Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the pre tied bow tie, adjust, clip and wear! Nice. Most of my bow ties are pre tied. But sometimes, for that super fancy event like #FancyFridays or something you wanna be tying your own bow tie and then letting it hang loose around your neck as the evening comes to a close. There really is something about the non perfect shape of a self tied bow tie that is just super awesome. Unfortunately, tying it is a different story, if you’ve never done it before it’s a nightmare, however, much like learning to tie a necktie when you’ve got the principle it works every time. I have been through many tutorials with many different techniques and for some reason they always under explain the final and trickiest step. The tutorial below does a great job, it really is the best out there, if you can ignore the cheese ball music and the fact that his final bow tie looks pretty shoddy. The adjustment at the end is what makes the finished product come to life, so spend a little time on that. Finally, if this is your first time your’e gonna need an extra 30min to get ready or you’re gone be late for that wedding / Barmitzvah / Playboy Bunny party.

Good luck and enjoy.

Today was gonna be a comfy day and like most days I started off deciding there was 1 thing I was going to wear, and then build an outfit around that. Today it was my fav pair of jeans. But more on that later. I had no big serious meetings and with the weather changing it’s getting difficult to wear so many layers.

Skinny jeans are tricky things. They’re either not skinny, or they’re too skinny, or you need to skip a bond repayment to afford them. I was after a pair of raw denim type jeans for a while and have made the mistake of buying “kinda” what I wanted. Then I found these guys at stuttafords, weirdly enough I was hoping to pick some up on a recent trip to Texas (something about wrangler that makes me think cowboy) but never saw any - jeans, not cowboys. Anyway I just loved the details on this guy, the orange stitching, the rope detail on the button, the embossed leather patch on the back pocket and mostly the gingham lined pockets (how cool?) Favourite thing? The price! when I bought them about 2 months ago, they were just over R500. Where do you get real jeans for R500 now days.

Today was one of those weird weather days. The sky threatened rain, my weather app threatened rain, even the weather report made a threat of some sorts. So taking into account that I had no meetings and the fact that I know I love gingham, I took a more causal approach to Monday.

I’ve been saying for ages how badly I need some pocket squares. They seem to be sneaking up on a lot of mens fashion blogs these days. It’s that whole “gentleman” look that I love, things like suspenders and driving gloves and wingtips and hunting jackets. I love how easy it is to make those classic pieces fun. Needless to say, you just can’t find any pocket squares here, well nowhere normal (you could probably find them at boutiques and luxury stores like Louis Vuitton or Dunhill) But when it comes to fashion items like this you want to spend as little as possible. After all you won’t wear them everyday and who’s to say they won’t be out as quickly as they came in. So Asos.com is the perfect place to pick up good quick fashion, and I did. All of these guys were only 5 pounds. Some of them are neckerchiefs, and I doubt I’ll ever use it as one, but there’s nothing to say it won’t double up as the perfect pocket square. I tried to cover all the basics blue, red, green and white. With some florals thrown in for fun.

What does one wear to the polo? It sounds pretty fancy, I had visuals of linen suits and ladies in big hats, lots of fake laughing and the “chinging” of champagne glasses. All I knew was, I wanted to wear a pocket square. There’s been a lot of pocket square action happening around me and all I knew is I wanted in on that action. Unfortunately the only thing I have remotely close to a pocket square is this little red silk thing I think I picked up at the Oriental Plaza once to complete a fancy dress outfit or something. Luckily pocket squares are the kinda things that can make there own statement, they just need to touch on something else in the outfit and ‘voila’ they work.

I was kinda close with my image of the polo. We were in the BMW tent and it was fancy, with real laughter though, and ladies in hats. Misha was wearing something she called a ‘fascinator’ I think it worked and she looked lovely. Big thank you to the folks at BMW South Africa for having us, we had fun.
