What do you wear when you’re walking the streets of Cape Town?

Well, I’m a big t-shirt and jeans guy, just not for work….well, not often.

There’s nothing to it really as it’s almost impossible to get wrong. Even though I have a giant pile of T shirts in my closet I’ve been sticking to the very simple graphic ones lately, I just find them easiest to wear.

The details of this outfit are as follows:

Suglasses by Ray Ban available here

T Shirt by Love Brigade

Jeans from Levi

Shoes by Fred Perry you can find similar ones at Asos

The Belt. This belt received a lot of love and queries on Instagram:

You want the belt? It’s available at Asos

Okay. Stay Fancy.

Another black tie event.

Another, creative black tie application.

Still wanting to use up all my new stuff, I decided to throw on my new blazer and bow tie together with that new pocket square. I was happy to see everything that I had bought independently of one another all went perfectly (I thought) when brought together.

It’s one little tip worth following when shopping, “don’t buy anything you need to buy something else for to make it wearable”, make sure that everything new you buy can work with something you already own, otherwise it just sits in the back of your closet.

The details of this outfit are the following:

Blazer from Zara

Shirt and from Ben Sherman

Jeans by Cheap Monday

Bow tie from The Tie Bar (appears to already be sold out)

Pocket square from Asos (appears to already be sold out)

Shoes from Zara (Available currently inSouth Africa)

Okay. Stay Fancy.

I’ve ben looking for colored laces for a while, and they’re really difficult to find here in South Africa, so when one of my best, blogger extraordinaire from hewhosayshmm was on a trip to the states I got him to pick up some from me. He found these guys at Nordstrom and pretty much bought them all.

Lucky me.

Anyway, so what the deal with colored laces. The first time I saw them was on a pair of Paul Smith shoes, a simple black pair of bulchers with some purple shoe laces. I loved that it made a pair of very formal shoes, feel a lot more casual, something that didn’t feel out of place with a pair of jeans.

Now, you kinda see them everywhere, but all you really need is some nice colored laces to make your old shoes look a little more fancy, but in a casual kinda way.

Below are some examples of how I transformed some of my shoes. Cheap and cheerfull.

For those of you who don’t have access to a Nordtrom, try Paul Smith, they have some super nice stuff, a little pricier but rad.

Okay. Stay Fancy.

For those of you who don’t know, we’ve been in the middle of a move from Johannesburg to Cape Town and it’s the reason our blog has had such a serious lack of content.

Sorry.

But now, we’re in Cape Town and last night was the first night of the loerie awards (our local advertising award show - for those not from South Africa or in the Ad industry), the dress code was black tie, but creatives are renowned for being non conformists, suit becomes a very loose black tie, often without so much as a tie to be seen.

I, as we know, am not one to shy away from dressing up, and I’ve been holding on to this new blazer for a special occasion, but then just decided to wear it to the loeries : ) I’ve also received a lot of online purchases and it was fun seeing how everything came together in the end.

The details of this outfit are the following:

Blazer from Zara (currently at the Zara in the waterfront)

Shirt and Pants both from H&M

Tie from Asos

Pocket square from Asos (appears to already be sold out)

Tie clip from The Tie Bar

Okay. Stay Fancy.

Weirdly enough, there is a lot of debate out there regarding wether your socks should match you shoes, or wether they should in fact match your pants. It would appear though that the general consensus is “your socks should match your pants” like in the example below.

You see, all that you’re really trying to do is create a seamless transition from your the hem of your pants to your shoe so as you walk and your pants sway, there isn’t an unsightly break in the color. So the thought of matching your socks to your shoes is generally the same, though it can start getting tricky when wearing grey pants and brown shoes, either way I believe this rule should only be followed on the most formal of formal occasions, like meeting the queen. Otherwise your outfit is as bland as this grey blur above.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of the bright colored sock. I think it takes something formal and makes it less serious and as with all rules in fashion if you break it with confidence it works.

Then there’s this guy, the “european sock” and for those of you who follow our Instagram feed will already know, I’m not shy to show a little skin around the ankles. I wish I had a better explanation as to why, but I don’t. It’s a european thing I guess, something I picked up somewhere ages ago and just loved, I believe it requires a good comfy hidden sock to work, but the fashionistas say go the whole hog. Meh, I’ll take the comfort route on this one.

Okay. Stay fancy.

Of course you’re Grandfather never wore bow tie’s or ties like this. Neither did Jordan and Blake’s Grandfather, he did inspire them though, with this little bit of dapper dexterity “dress like the man you aspire to be” How rad is that? So they did one better, they created a range of mens accessories called Heywood1922, Heywood is the middle name given to all the boys in the family and of course there Grandad was born in 1922.

The stuff as you can see has that retro feel, but its perfectly styled for the modern man. I found them on Instagram and just loved the stuff, so I ordered these pieces. When it arrived I was super thrilled, the detail is amazing, I love those little badges that they put on everything and the hand stamped packaging. If you love it as much as me you can get it here.

Okay. Stay fancy.

This will be the second of the dressiquete posts. And again, these rules are not mine, just the formal rules by with men should dress by. This one is simple. “Your belt should match your shoes”, like this guy here. Hey dapper beard face man. The problem is, most men struggle with this, well, they either struggle or don’t care, I guess it’s because they think the rule is black and white, but like most rules it isn’t, it too has its little bit of flex.

Below I’ve shown the most common shoe colours, Black, brown and tan, If you don’t already own all 3, you should. What I’ve also tried to do, is show some flexibility in the rule, and this part may be a little more my advice than law, but I doubt the fashion police are gonna stop you for trying. Each pair of shoes is paired up with 3 belts, the belt on the far left is your fail safe, when in doubt match as closely as you can. The belt in the middle, is when you wanna have some fun and maybe introduce some colour, and of course I don’t mean roller coaster type fun, just merely fashion fun, you wanna have roller coaster type fun then ride a roller coaster. Better yet drink 3 beers and ride a roller coaster. I digress.

You see the “belt should match your shoes” rule speaks merely to the tone, If you only never wear a brown belt with black shoes, or vica versa you should be good to go, but introducing color will always work if you stick to the same tone. This is why I have paired the black shoes with blue (especially good when worn with jeans to make your look less formal) and some of the brown shoes with woven more textured colored belts. Finally the last belt is to remind you to pick up on the texture of the shoe, this small shift can change the look from formal to fun quite easily., however, when it comes to suede, stick to double suede, something about the inside and outside of a cow just fails to work for me.

All belts and shoes on this post (except beard face at the top) are available right now at ASOS, tell them I sent you. Kidding, they’ll never remember me. But seriously, tell them I sent you.

Okay. Stay Fancy

Still loving the response were getting on #FancyFriday and it really is quite a fun thing. It’s cool to think that different people all around the world are just getting dressed up, because they can. My big thing this friday was my new pocket square and tie purchase from Heywood, it just goes so perfectly with so much stuff I already have in my wardrobe, and thats a little trick I’ve learnt is buy stuff you can wear with the stuff you already have, not just something that looks great in the store and then goes with nothing when you get home.

Here are the details of this outfit

Blazer from Zara

Oxford shirt from Abercrombie and Fitch

Tie and pocket square both from Heywood

Pants by H&M

Shoes from Zara

22 Entries this week and everyone just keeps upping their game, making it incredibly hard for us to choose. We sit over breakfast and narrow it down and debate, not that either of us are experts but somehow there is always 1 person who has that 1 thing that stands out and crowns them winner. Either way, we’re happy we can feature everyone who takes part here on the blog.

Taking it home for the men this week was a combined entry from @dcchristian and @drewsez we especially loved those green brogues and patterned pants, makes it fancy but with that radical edge. Well don’t guys.

The ladies went all out this week and we were super happy to see way more stuff from the girls, really bring the fanciness home. In the end this emerald ensemble from @lilkimmyc could just not be beaten, fancy right down to those emerald heels, after all, it’s the details that do it.

Below, in no particular order, are the rest of the entries. Some amazing looks and we’re proud to have such stylish instagram followers. Looking forward to seeing what we get next week. If you’re not on instagram feel free to enter via twitter at @whatmybfwore or mail us at [email protected] and spread the word people will be exciting to see 100 entries 1 day (though it may kill me trying to put the post together)

Okay.Stay Fancy.

Working is hard. I’m not the biggest fan of it, but I need stuff and work lets me get that stuff, and sometimes when you leave, they give you stuff for working so hard, and I had worked pretty damn hard. So Friday being my last day at DDB Johannesburg, the team threw me a little farewell on thursday night where they handed over 2 of the most amazing farewell gifts ever known to anyone leaving somewhere for somewhere else.

The first was this amazing pair of Ray Ban Club Masters, can you believe this design has been around since the 50′s? Decade after decade they just seem to come back into fashion. It kinda feels like a pair of Wayfarers and Aviators had a baby and this was the amazing result, as classic and timeless.

Now I have been eyeing these guys out online for ages, of course haven’t ever ben able to find them in any sunglass store locally, apparently they’ve been discontinued. Bollocks I say. Of course I found them online but then never took the actual step of buying them (serious commitment issues), If you love them, and you should, you can get them here these dudes ship all over the world.

The second gift was this amazing uniform wares watch. I’ve always been a fan of simple watches, and these guys take the cake when it comes to simple. Are you kidding me? How beautiful is this watch, I had also been eyeing this bad boy out online forever, just trying to find a way of getting it for less. Kinda worked out then didn’t it? Uniform wares has a great collection as they pretty much cover every price point with the watches getting fancier the higher up you go. My next watch will be this guy from there 200 series. Wow.

So all in all, spoilt.

Okay. Stay Fancy
