Full-lengthThis morning’s outfit was all about this tie I’m giving away with the guys at Kiph.

And this tie just loved a denim shirt, it begs to be a casual tie but I wouldn’t let it, I couldn’t it’s a fancy friday. I also wanted to bring this blazer out, the last time I wore it was in July 2012, but I’ve always found it too long and slightly big, so after dishing out so much tailoring advice, I decided to have it tailored. It’s awesome now!

The rest of everything pretty much fell into place, the green pants picked up on the blazer, the blue shoes on the shirt…the socks, well I didn’t want to wear socks, but it’s too cold, so I wore camo socks instead…It’s practically the same thing.

The details of the outfit are below

So now, how do you win this amazing tie?

This-tie

Truth is, this is my favourite tie from the 3 we’re giving away, and here’s how you can win it.

We’re gonna be running this give away on twitter.

So I really hope you’re following my twitter by now as well as Kiph on twitter. If not, that’s step 1.

Step 2 simply tweet “I want to #RejectTheOrdinary with @kiph_courageous & @whatmybfwore”

or simply retweet my tweet just like that (you’ll see it).

Is that simple enough? No need to leave me a comment, I will simply track the hashtag and re-tweets.

Once again, the competition is open to anyone anywhere in the world and the prize will be shipped to you.

Good Luck and stay fancy.

Together with my little feature in GQ magazine this month I was asked to document my 10 essentials for GQ online.

Now, these aren’t meant to be fashion essentials, just the 10 things I cant live without. Admittedly, I had a lot more than 10, and whittling it down was pretty difficult, but in the end, I definitely couldn’t get by without these guys. Here’s what they are and why.

Essential 1: I need to start my day with a good cup of coffee, the best coffee in Cape Town is a little spot called Deluxe thats pretty much 2 blocks from where I stay. The walk there and back allows me have a meeting with myself, I plan the day ahead and all thing I need to do, no matter how late I’m running, I always make time for this essential.

Essential 2: Every gentleman should learn how to tie a bow tie - it’s tricky, but when you get it right, you’ll never wear pre-tied again. Besides there’s nothing like letting that bad boy swing loose around your neck at the end of a night!

This particular one is from LVJ Haberdasher

Essential 3: A good leather satchel goes a long way, literally. It’s one of those items that gets better with age and collects stories along the way. From a practical level its also a handy place to put all your stuff.

Essential 4: When I’m in the mood and the weather allows, I love nothing more than taking my little vespa around town It’s the best way to see the city and you never struggle to find parking. This helmet is therefore an actual essential, because you know, you only get one head.

The above helmet is a Ruby, check out the post I did on it a while back

Essential 5: For the most part, I live life by the book - regular exercise, healthy diet, etc. But you need balance and I believe It’s better to die of something, than to live for nothing, so yes, I smoke, not much, maybe more than I should, but a lot less than I could.

Essential 6: Really this goes without saying! Whether it’s a pocket square, a tie clip, a lapel flower or all three, it’s the details that bring your outfit together. You should always have a little collection to mix and match.

Essential 7: Most of you already know this, but for those who dont if I had to choose one shirt fabric to wear for the rest of my days, it would be gingham. It’s the most versatile pattern and seems to go with everything.

The one above is by Ben Sherman

Essential 8: So we spend forever finding the right jacket and getting it tailored, then we fill our pockets with stuff and end up bulging all over the place and ruining the silhouette we’ve worked so hard to create. Keep a slim wallet with only the essentials. Coins are for car guards and buskers.

Essential 9: Leather shoes are an essential - they wear well and last long. If you can afford to, get an all leather shoes, inside, outside and under. If you only get 1 leather shoe, make it a wingtip brogue, it will live on your shoe rack for the rest of your life, or it should if you take care of it.

Essential 10: A simple watch with a leather strap to tell the time (and maybe the date) is pretty much all you need. If you are not actually running laps or scuba diving at the time, leave the chunky chronographs and sportswatches at home…or in your gym bag.

That’s it, my 10 essentials for GQ, It was quite a fun project. It also left me thinking, what would my 10 fashion essentials be? Or what would all the fashion essentials be for any mans wardrobe? Maybe I should start that as a new section on the blog.

What do you think?

Okay. Stay fancy.

P1150902Been a while since we’ve managed a decent Wooster Wednesday!

Taa daaa!!! This one is awesome! Not just because Nick is wearing Green brogues - Wow - But because it’s a classic Wooster, but with a slightly more colourful approach!

At first glance, it doesn’t kinda work does it…or it does, but it doesn’t feel like it should. Then you look a little closer.

It’s pretty much a testament to the genius of the tartan shirt (plaid for all our American friends), you will see that it picks up on nearly all the colours in Nicks outfit, but also keeps everything with in the same kind of tone intensity. The shoes, are the trick for me with this guy, they just pick up on that green on the shirt, but even if they didn’t they’re still a pure statement piece.

I’m not completely crazy about all the brash branding on the shorts, but I like the concept with the colours. If I was to re create this outfit…or at least this idea, I would go with these items. They’re probably a lot cheaper too.

Okay. Stay fancy.

I’ve been doing a lot of travelling lately.

But that really annoying kind of travelling, where you’re gone for 1 or 2 nights in a place with unpredictable weather. The problem with this is that you never really know what to pack, so you just end up packing more than you need…just not enough to necessitate a proper check in bag, and who has the time to check in bags anyway, you want to get on and off that plane as quickly as possible. At least, I do, I hate flying. Lastly, it has to be leather, these kind of things take a serious beating, at least with leather it’s just gonna look better the more you use it.

So I desperately need a medium bag, small enough for carry on, and large enough for whatever I need in under a week. I think this is it, or at least it would be if I had the money…it’s the same price as last weeks bicycle, and at least that stops me having to fly.

Okay. Stay fancy.

GQ-July-featureI am super proud to say I made into South African GQ. It’s not something that happens everyday for a guy who just likes dressing dapper.

Unfortunately though, this may be, the worst photo ever taken of me. Well, at least in a national publication. Either way, I’m honoured, the interview translated awesomely, and it’s something I never even dreamed of.

Kay, that’s enough tooting my own horn, if you like the outfit and wanna re create it, here’s how:

Blue blazer by Markham - Get similar here

Red Gingham shirt by Ben Sherman - Similar here

Red tartan wollen tie from LVJ Haberdashers

Micro Houndstooth Pocket square by Heywood

Brown Cardigan by Gap - get similar here

Red and brown driving gloves by Luvaria Ulisses

Skinny tan chinos by Levis

Brown boots by Aldo

Okay. Stay fancy…you may just find yourself in the GQ.

51512CanalSt4777WebRecently I was asked if I could start offering some advice on a more casual approach to dressing.

And maybe it is time that I started sharing my more casual approach to dressing, after all I certainly don’t walk around in ties and blazers all day.

So I decided to start off by picking a less formal Sartorial Sunday, as a kind of proof point that with the slightest detail, even the most casual look can appear dapper. In this case it’s all about that over sized bow tie and it’s strong contrast to everything else he is wearing. It’s perfectly preppy and works amazingly I think, I might of done it a little different, some white plimsole sneakers and some slightly slimmer pants, I may of even kept my shirt untucked though (contrary to everything I usually believe)

Wanna re create this look?

Try this:

Denim jacket - similar here

Bow tie, with this look any will do, but here is a rad one.

White button up shirt - similar here

Brown chinos - similar here

Converse sneakers here - but prep it up with these rather

Okay. Stay fancy

full-length-2Firstly, we’ve been having some camera problem, so excuse the slightly blurry pics, we’re in the market to replace our dinosaur SLR…if anyone is looking to sponsor us one : )

Anyway, on to the fashion.

Another Fancy Friday, another give away. And for those who saw yesterdays post, I’ll be giving a way a tie every week for the next 3 weeks curtsey of Kiph.

So needless to say, this entire outfit was built around this amazing floral tie. Floral ties are super easy to dress up, they offer enough colour variation that you can pick a tone and go with it, but they’re not graphic enough that anyone thing stands out.

I went totally classic here too, herringbone blazer, oxford shirt and and khaki chinos, a nice little twist here with the fringed shoe, if give a bit of an old school golfer vibe, so it helps keep the look classic.

The details of the outfit as well as how to win the tie are below:

holding-jacket

Blazer from Markham - get a similar one here

Shirt from Uniqlo

Tie by Good Heavens

Skinny Chinos by Levis

Good luck and of course, stay fancy.

This is a serious want.

In fact I had planned something completely different for this weeks want of the week, and then I rsaw this guy.

Now, I realise this isn’t strictly fashion, but you could argue that it’s a mega accessory. I’ve been wanting a hipster bike for ages, for no other reason than, well, it just looks cool and it’s a great way to get around on the weekends, that want was heightened with last weeks Wooster Wednesday when Nick spoke to us about his new found love for the bicycle.

So when this bad boy popped up on my screen this morning ( I subscribe to the Paul Smith newsletter because I like punishing myself) I had a tiny internal weep. Why? Well, it’s just awesome, but it costs the same as a small island.

I guess that’s what the want of the week is all about, unattainable objects.

Okay. Stay Fancy

This is a slightly different Sartorial Sunday, its a little story on one of Scott Schumans favourite subjects Mr Sam Lambert, a carpenters assistant turned tailor, after stumbling on to this little collection, I had to share it as well as some excerpts from the interview, the man is just too cool.

The son of a tailor, Sam approaches every outfit by choosing his hat and shoes first, then judging by the above pictures, the rest just seems to fall into place for him, not a huge surprise given the man had his first bespoke suit at 5 years old. I guess it’s to be expected when you grow up threading needles and chalking fabric up for dad.

Mr Lambert, started his design career after tailoring some vintage pieces of his own, then after opening up his own store and launching a collection did he think it time to learn the tricks of the trade with none other than the infamous tailors of Saville Row. He learnt all the rules he had been breaking for so long, then went on to continue breaking them, but with authority this time.

He is currently head of design for Spencer Heart and one half of Art comes first, go check them out.

Sartorial Sundays wouldnt be complete though without taking the outfit, appreciating it and then letting you re create it, so here goes:

What’s not to love, the man is wearing all grey and punching you in the face with those red pops. Pop pop pop. I love that all the greys are just slightly different, but the perfect distance apart in tone to separate them - That’s a little trick, if you’re matching something, match it perfectly, or otherwise make sure the colours are far enough apart that the differentiation is clear otherwise you end up with what looks like a mistake. The other helpful trick is keeping the texture similar, and Sam hits the nail on the head here with his pants, jacket and tie doing that. Add to that the perfect red touches in the jersey, socks and pocket square and, well, it’s perfect!

Lets see if we can re create the look:

Similar grey blazer here

Similar charcoal pleated pants here

Similar grey tie here

Similar white button down shirt here

Similar red v-neck jersey here

similar red polka dot pocket square here

Similar socks here

similar shoes here (well, not entirely similar, but this is what I would wear with this outfit)

Okay. Stay fancy.
