A couple of weeks ago, I showed you how to puff a pocket square, a nice simple discreet fold for the discerning businessman. Now, although there are over 50 different ways to fold your pocket square, I still believe the simplest are the best and just a few fold is all you need to finish off your look.

Today, with just a simple flick of the wrist, we’re gonna turn that puff upside down and give you a fold with a little more flair! ( why do I feel like I just plagiarised someone’s rap lyrics?!)

One rule to remember is matching the colours of your pocket square to those of your tie and shirt. Start with that rule and you’ll always look dapper no matter what fold you go for!

Step-1

Step 1

Step one is picking the perfect pocket square (try saying that 3 times fast). The inverted puff is best used on a pocket square with contrasting edges – This way it lets you show off the pattern and the edges all together.

I think it’s best to keep your look a little more simple for something like this and let the pocket square steal the show.

Step-2

Step 2

Step 2 is finding the centre of your square. On the last post, I showed you the pinch technique but here is one just as simple as that.

Take the 4 corners of your square and bring the tips together. Simple right. Just make sure you keep the pattern on the outside as this is this is what you will see in the end.

Step-3

Step 3

Keeping the edges clamped together, use your free hand to clamp the pocket square between your forefinger and thumb. Don’t squeeze it too hard as you want to maintain a little puff at the bottom.

Again, you may need to do this a few times till you find the best spot – Scroll down to step 4 and you’ll get what I’m talking about

Step-4

Step 4

Using your thumb to hold the pocket square in place fold the bottom toward the tips.

This step can be a little tricky as you want the puffy part (technical term) to end up just below the tips, otherwise, it will hide those tremendous tips in the end and that’s not what you want. The tips are everything!!! #TipGameStrong

Step-5

Step 5

Now it comes time to add the flair and adjust the tips to where you want them. Don’t get carried away though, just the tips : )

If you don’t get it perfect now, you can finish it off at the end. That’s what step 7 is for. Wait, I didnt make a step 7! Hmmmmm…

Step-6

Step 6

Step 6 as always is the easiest. Stuff that pocket square into your lapel pocket and let those tips point to the sky!

Once it’s stuffed in there, do your final adjustments. Get the tips pointing out over the puff and there you have it!! The inverted puff!

Remember, the inverted puff is all about flair, this is no time to be discreet so take it further than you think you should and really let it puff out. As with every fold, the imperfection of the tips will make this work best. Don’t waste your time getting them equally spaced and perfectly symmetrical! There is no flair in perfection!

That’s it. Adjust your tie, button your blazer and put some swag into your step!

If you’re shopping for pocket squares and like this blue paisley one, you can pick it up at Kurt Geiger online here.

Okay. Stay Fancy.
